DOUGLAS GINSBURG, Federal Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit:
As Americans, we enjoy more rights than most people. But along with rights come responsibilities – such as finding ways to serve the country.
You can begin just by obeying the laws – something dear to my heart as a judge. That includes paying your taxes, which underwrite our schools, pave our roads, and fund dozens of other public services. You can also work for your local or state government, or for the federal government.
One of the easiest things you can do to serve your country is simply to vote in elections. Or, taking that a step further, run for public office – whether to keep policies you do like or change policies you don’t like. And you can serve in the armed forces and help protect the liberties we all have.
Whichever way you serve America, remember that we are not servants of the government. We are free people; the Framers of the Constitution designed the government to protect our rights – to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
